Word Paintings
A Word Paintings seamlessly combines two forms of creative narrative: the art of storytelling and painting. The creation of each labor intensive piece starts with a painted focal point. Then, the background is formed by hand lettering a story in which the entire painting is based upon. When viewed from a distance each Word Painting is meant to convey a cheery anecdote, but on closer inspection the viewer can see the complex nature of a seemingly simplistic image.
The King of Fools
The Story:
A beloved king loses the love of his life, his queen. In her wake he abandons all his duties in pursuit of finding a way to bring her back. In time the king grows cold heartless, until he himself turns to stone. Unable to feel anymore, he spends the rest of his days trying to recreate himself a human heart.
Shattered Mind
The Story:
Bert sets out on an adventure to cure Donbon's headache by shrinking himself and going inside his brain. While inside Donbon's head, the brain realizes something is wrong because there are now two Berts in every memory. To fix this problem, the brain resets itself, making the worlds around Bert literally fall apart.
Winter Fireflies
The Story
Donbon becomes obsessed with fireflies and is very disappointed when he finds out they don't glow in the winter. He devotes months of his life trying to find a way to make fireflies shine all year around. When he finally figures it out, something simply amazing happens.
When Donbon Broke The World
The Story:
Khristina and Donbon were strolling through a park when Donbon tripped and started cursing the earth for all it’s random placement of tree roots and rocks. The earth (making good on a promise to fix Donbon the next time he bad mouths it) crumbles around Donbon sending him to the center of the earth. After pleading with the earth, Khristina is given 24 hours to go to the center of the earth and retrieve Donbon.
When Is Human The Monster?
The Story:
A long, long time ago humans shared their existence with monsters. As the human race spread, they forced all other creatures far from their lands and from memories. When a strange looking beast wanders into a village the village guards are called to action. Only one guard is able to stand his ground against this creature, but he’s torn; slay this creature and wipe it from history and protect his village, or let it go and run the risk of it coming back and rampaging through the village again.
Berty Bee
The Story:
Bert the cat and Bee the bee were raised together in a hive deep in a forest and became close friends. Bee grew gigantic in effort to keep up with Bert’s growth, and they were both kicked out of their hive because they no longer fit. They traveled the globe in an effort to find a place to live, but are judged because their friendship is deemed “unnatural”.
The Dreaming Tree
The Story:
A young and handsome boy by the name of Vlad is loved by his village because of his good nature. One day he finds a tree with strange fruit growing from it. The tree grants wishes to those who sleep with it’s fruit under their pillows and dream of what they desire most. But, this tree takes just as much as it gives. Each wish Vlad makes he becomes uglier, and the villagers hardly recognize him and start calling him Dracula. Vlad becomes bitter and angry and his wishes become more and more selfish until he’s granted that he cannot come back from.
New World Champion
The Story:
An up and coming wrestling legend gets badly injured during a match. Forced into early retirement, he sits by and watches his life and legacy fade away. One day his ex-agent calls him up with a great P.R. stunt that might put him back in the limelight. Together they set up a match with elementary school students. When he throws the match the world will see him as a tough guy with a golden heart and all kinds of doors will open for him. During the bout he suffers multiple flashbacks from the match that ended his career. Thinking he’s in another time, things go south very quickly.
